Da Hong Pao, also known as Big Red Robe, is one of the most celebrated Wuyi Rock Teas from the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian Province. Growing among the region’s dramatic cliffs and rocky valleys, it belongs to the oolong tea family and is traditionally regarded as one of the most distinguished varieties of Wuyi Yan Cha (Rock Tea).
 
The legendary mother bushes of Da Hong Pao grow on the cliff face of Jiulongke in Wuyi Mountain. Beside these ancient tea bushes is the well-known stone inscription “Da Hong Pao,” carved in 1927. Today, the original mother bushes are carefully protected and are no longer harvested for commercial tea production.
 
The name “Da Hong Pao” means “Big Red Robe.” It is associated with a number of traditional legends, the best known of which tells of red robes being placed over the precious tea bushes in recognition of their exceptional quality and importance.
 
Da Hong Pao is traditionally processed through withering, tossing, partial oxidation, rolling and roasting. This careful craftsmanship gives the tea its layered fragrance, full-bodied texture and distinctive mineral character, traditionally known as Yan Yun, or “rock rhyme.”
 
When brewed, Da Hong Pao produces a clear amber liquor with a deep and complex aroma. The flavour is rich and well structured, combining roasted notes, ripe fruit, warm spice, flowers and minerals. Its distinctive floral fragrance may remain in the empty cup long after drinking and continues to develop beautifully over multiple infusions.
