Lao Cong Shui Hsien is a traditional Wuyi Rock Tea made from mature Shui Hsien tea bushes grown in the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian Province. “Shui Hsien” is commonly translated as “Narcissus,” while “Lao Cong” refers to older tea bushes that have developed deeper roots and a more distinctive character over many years of growth.

The name Shui Hsien is associated with the tea’s naturally rich floral and honey-like fragrance, which can be reminiscent of narcissus blossoms. No flowers or flavouring are added. Its aroma is created naturally through the cultivar, growing environment and traditional semi-oxidised oolong processing.

Shui Hsien was introduced to the Wuyi Mountain region during the Qing Dynasty and later became one of the most important varieties used in Wuyi Rock Tea. It is especially valued for its strong fragrance, smooth body and ability to express the rocky growing environment of the region.

Compared with younger Shui Hsien bushes, Lao Cong Shui Hsien generally offers greater depth and a more mature aromatic profile. In addition to floral and honeyed notes, it may develop distinctive woody, mossy and forest-like characters, sometimes described as Lao Cong Yun—the unique “old-bush character” associated with mature tea plants.

The leaves are traditionally processed through withering, tossing, oxidation, rolling and roasting. This careful process creates a balanced tea with a rounded body, layered fragrance and the mineral character traditionally known as Yan Yun, or “rock rhyme.”

When brewed, Lao Cong Shui Hsien produces a clear amber liquor with a rich and lasting aroma. The flavour is smooth and full-bodied, with notes of honey, orchid-like flowers, aged wood, moss, roasted nuts and minerals. Its mature character becomes increasingly noticeable across multiple infusions, leaving a soft, deep and lingering finish.
